How tadpoles breathe

Before getting fat and leaving the water, you can observe how tadpoles breathe during this frog activity. All you need is a firm hand and a little patience.

What you need:
Tadpole
Transparent Plastic Cups
Pond water
Eyedropper
Food coloring

How to breathe tadpoles:

Step 1: Look for tadpoles in shallow ponds. Catch a large tadpole and place it in a transparent plastic cup of the pond water.

Step 2: if the tadpole remains immobile, fill a pipette with food coloring. Slowly and gently lower the tip of the pipette into the water until the tip is near the mouth of the tadpole. You may want to exercise with a pipette filled with water until you can do it without disturbing the tadpole.

Step 3: once the pipette is installed, slowly squeeze a drop of food coloring into the water in front of the tadpole. Slowly and carefully remove the pipette and carefully observe the tadpole. If the animal has not moved, the colored water will soon flow out of the gills on the sides of the tadpole head.

The tadpole breathes by drawing water through the mouth and passing oxygen-rich water through gills with small blood vessels. The tadpole absorbs oxygen from the water and releases carbon dioxide. The water comes from the gills.

In the next craft you will have the opportunity to observe frogs in action.
